Stocks and shares is a confusing prospect to try and understand, and only few people can fully comprehend how the stock market operates. Though a stock broker would be able to assist you with your portfolio it is advisable that you learn the very basics so that you can come to terms with how your investments mature or falter and how to resolve such issues.

The stock markets around the world can essentially be defined as the process through which all shares are traded. The actual place where stocks, shares and bonds are purchased and sold is called an exchange, of which these exchanges regulate the market together. A large proportion of share dealing is now carried out electronically but the stock exchange use to be a place where brokers would literally exchange shares with one another.

Virtually all countries that have a developed economy should have their own stock market, and depending on the strength of it, may well be driven by more than one exchange. For instance, the United States of America have two principal exchanges which are the New York Stock Exchange and the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quoted System (NASDAQ). The later mainly lists technology companies, and their entire financial system is completely computerized.

The stock market in the United Kingdom has its main exchange in London, unsurprisingly called the London Stock Exchange. However, the London Stock Exchange also regulates the Alternative Investment Market for companies that are either too small or not established enough to feature on the main market.

To all intents and purposes, this system brings the buyers and sellers of stocks and shares together. Like any common market, supply and demand dictates what the price will be. The greater the demand for certain shares, the higher the price shall be. Provided the share price suits both the buyer and the seller, an exchange is more than likely to take place, as long as certain rules and regulations are adhered to.

It is advisable to compare all the stocks and shares that fall into that same sector when trying to buy shares in a particular industry. There are a number of different categories in the UK, ranging from the banking sector to the media and pharmaceuticals sector.

Once you are clear on what you want then it is time to contact a stock broker. Your local bank or building society should be able to show you the way. Alternatively, the London Stock Exchange will be able to provide you with a list of reputable brokers free of charge.

The Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers (APCIMS) can also help as they are a trading body that freely gives out details of all its member brokers, including contact details and areas of service when requested.
